Spelman Community,

As you may be aware, Spelman student Taniyah Pilgrim and Morehouse student Messiah Young were assaulted by Atlanta Police Department officers on Saturday, May 30.

On Sunday, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms terminated two of the officers and moved three others to desk duty.

At an 11:30 a.m. press conference today, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced that six officers involved in the incident have been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, simple battery, pointing or aiming a gun, simple battery and criminal damage to property.

"I'm happy they are finally being held accountable," said Taniyah at the press conference. "Any police officer who thinks it is okay to drag someone, beat someone, do all this stuff because they are cops, I hope they are all going to be held accountable as well."

I wholeheartedly agree with Taniyah. The arrests of these officers do not erase the pain and suffering of Taniyah and Messiah. The entire Spelman community stands with our students and their families as the case takes the first step towards justice.

Sincerely,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
President, Spelman College
