Friends,

We have learned that in recent days, an off-campus event was attended by symptomatic students, which subsequently caused a spike in infections on campus.

As a result, eight Spelman students are in isolation and, after contact tracing, eight additional students who may have been exposed are currently in quarantine.

Spelman is providing all students with care and we hope for a speedy recovery for those who have been impacted.

I write now with the reminder that we are still operating within the COVID-19 guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Fulton County health officials.

We are proud of your work and steadfast diligence helping to maintain an overall low COVID-19 positivity rate. With this recent rise in infections, we have implemented our protocols for isolation and tracing to identify appropriate quarantine application.

This cluster of cases reminds us that the following medical protocols are essential :

1) Monitor and report your symptoms.
2) If you experience symptoms, immediately call the health center.
Do not congregate with other students.
3) Avoid large gatherings of more than 10 people.

As you know, this weekend we celebrate the 140th anniversary of Spelman’s founding. We had all hoped to have a gathering of students on the Oval to sing the Spelman Hymn to celebrate Founders Day. Given the recent reports of infections, though they are low, we will no longer host a gathering on the Oval.

There are other virtual events planned for the weekend that you will be able to enjoy to celebrate the landmark of Spelman’s 140th anniversary.

Be well. Stay safe.
