Friends,

Our campus community has settled into the spring 2021 semester. With three weeks of classes complete, we now have experience with all of the medical protocols that have been put into place to keep our campus community safe.

I write now to share with you the outcomes of the last three weeks of testing. As you may recall, students are tested twice weekly and faculty and staff members are tested weekly. Below are the statistics thus far:

We can also report that the rate of infection in metro Atlanta is dropping as are the hospitalizations, according to the New York Times and the Georgia Department of Public Health. At the same time, Georgia is ramping up its vaccinations.

On the subject of vaccinations, Spelman will be sending our community a survey. The survey will ask you, if we were to become a vaccination site, and vaccinations were offered to students and faculty and staff members, would you take the vaccination?

We have no plans to offer the vaccination yet. But we are collecting data, nonetheless.

Finally, I am pleased to report that I am hosting the President’s Reading Circle again this spring, in person! We are reading Isabel Wilkerson’s "Caste: The Origins of our Discontent." Ms. Wilkerson will be available for a community conversation on Monday, April 26.

Be well. Be the light. Keep the faith.
